Mendes Studio

The winner of an American Institute of Architects Honor Award from the Kentucky Society of Architects, this project is an art studio and darkroom situated behind an existing historic house in Lexington, KY. Though the footprint of the building is less than 20 feet square, the interior feels spacious and filled with light from clerestory windows which also provide passive solar heating. The building responds both to the city grid of Lexington as well as to the cardinal points, which are rotated 45 degrees from one another. This play between the orientation of the lot lines and the cardinal points manifests from the overall massing down to the load bearing brick details.
