Zilch House

With the advent of Net Metering of utility supplied electricity, a new economical housing archetype becomes possible: The affordable zero-net-energy house – in terms of purchased energy, a Zilch House. With grid intertied net metering, a homeowner’s electric meter runs “forward” when utility power is being consumed, but it runs backward when the house-system is sending surplus electricity back to the utility. On an annual basis when the same amount of electricity is exported from the house as is imported from the utility, then Net-Zero Energy has been achieved and the homeowner pays Zilch for electrical consumption.
