Sloped street study.A series of three commissions over five years from the Vienna Division of Urban Development and the National Bank of Austria for an ecological overbuilding of the main rail terminal yard in the city of Vienna with a new urban neighborhood. The Sustainable Urban Implantation was developed to heal the wound in the urban fabric created by the tracks with a dense sustainable neighborhood that would partner with a nearby rural town to provide for its food and energy. This project is one a number of Sustainable City-as-a-Hill urban models developed by the CSC Design Studio for commissions and competitions. Originally inspired by the dense human-scaled urban fabric of medieval hilltowns, this new urban model creates a walkable, pedestrian-oriented town, which requires few vehicles, and creates abundant public spaces such as markets, streets and squares. Whereas its medieval counterpart was a city built on a hill, the new urban model becomes a city built as a hill, using the Coupled Pan Space Frame, with the inner “hill” being comprised of the many large scale industrial and commercial buildings, mass transit and infrastructure that is needed for the operation of a modern city.
